Dual-Motor Planetary Transmission to Improve Efficiency in Electric Vehicles

Electric cars are typically subject to highly variable operational conditions, especially when they drive in urban environments. Consequently, the efficiency of electric motors may degrade significantly, possibly leading lower autonomy and higher running costs. Latest advances power electronics motion control have paved way development novel architectures full transmissions. In this paper, a dual-motor solution is proposed where two smaller coupled via planetary gear, contrast standard configuration that uses one larger motor directly connected wheels with fixed ratio reducer. The architecture guarantees both operate vicinity their optimal working range, resulting overall energy efficiency. technical requirements strategy system selected through parametric optimization process. Results included were obtained from extensive simulations performed over different driving cycles, showing transmission generally outperforms single-motor counterpart an average improvement about 9% reached delivery regeneration stage.
